Dealing with Java on the mac is not for the faint hearted. Recently I wanted to upgrade from the pre-installed Java 6 on the mac to Java 7 and it was messy enough to warrant a post. So here it is:
My original Java (Apple’s preinstalled version) sits in: /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk
Doing a java -version on the Terminal yields this:
java version “1.6.0_51″
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_51-b11-457-11M4509)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.51-b01-457, mixed mode)
To get jdk 7 I went to: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html
Downloaded jdk-7u25-macosx-x64.dmg and installed it.
Except when I do java -version again, it still showed 1.6.0_51 in the terminal.
When I do an env in the terminal, I can see that my JAVA_HOME is set to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home which is essentially a symlink that points to the old java. So all I need to do here is create a new symlink that points to the java 7 I installed.
sudo ln -s /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_25.jdk/Contents/ CurrentJDK
My car got hit by a truck. Luckily I escaped with only a minor scratch. In what followed and still unfolding I picked up a few learnings about how stuff works (in India) which I thought were worth sharing..
The traffic cop that appeared on the scene got the crowd to push my car to the side of the road to make way for the blocked traffic. And then asked me to bring my busted car to the nearest traffic police station and rode off on this bike. A good samaritan suggested I call up justdial – a local voice search engine, to get hold of a tow truck.
Tip Documents required for FIR: Copy of driving license (DL), registration certificate (RC), car insurance
My black macbook completed its 5 years back in january and I have loved it every inch of the way. Though it has been showing signs of aging for quite a while now. The plastic body started chipping away as early as a couple of years back. And the battery for some reason has been coming apart at the seams for just as long.
About a week back the track pad and the magic mouse left click became totally dysfunctional. I guessed this was because of the now swollen battery which was pushing up against the internals from the bottom enough to disrupt the mouse/trackpad function. Read the rest of this entry »
Apple iOS6 maps are practically useless for India. The quality of the maps is pathetic. Driving directions NEVER (zero times) work. Tiles simply don’t have the right size or shape or place data. And the worse part is being stuck because there is no official way to downgrade an iOS device.
Bad times are a changing though..looks like Google maps for iOS is just around the corner and Nokia released its Here Maps the day before. Although early reviews have been less than kind to Nokia, for India considering the lack of alternatives, I think Here is a lifesaver. Download here.
